Preventing rollback when starting on a hill
When starting on a hill with a steep gradient, vehicles can sometimes roll backward as the driver shifts their foot from the brake pedal to the accelerator. The Hill Start Assist System holds brake pressure for around one second after the brake pedal is released when starting on a hill. For example, when a vehicle stops halfway up a steep slope due to congestion, such as in the parking lot of a large shopping center, the driver can shift between pedals without rushing. The system also activates when reversing from standstill after stopping on a downward slope, putting drivers at ease when entering a parking space on a steep slope.
The system might not activate on gentle slopes.
Operation on brake release
Without Hill Start Assist

On a steep slope, the vehicle rolls backward as soon as the driver releases the brake pedal to step on the accelerator. Hurriedly stepping on the accelerator can cause a jerky start.
With Hill Start Assist

Vehicle rollback is temporarily prevented even when the brake is released. The driver can calmly move their foot to the accelerator for a smooth start.
Fine-precision control of brake pressure
The Hill Start Assist System helps the driver accelerate smoothly from standstill on slopes through fine-precision control of brake pressure. When the driver takes their foot off the brake pedal while the vehicle is on a slope, the Hill Start Assist System ensures there is enough brake pressure to stop the vehicle from rolling backward. The brake is released once the driver steps on the accelerator pedal and driving torque has increased to the level required to ascend the slope. The gradient of a slope is detected with a G-force sensor that detects forward and backward acceleration. Brake pressure is controlled with fine precision according to the gradient.
The system might not activate on gentle slopes.
