Tokyo, February 23, 1999 - Honda today announced the development of a high-revving 2-liter, 4-cylinder DOHC VTEC engine that sets new standards for performance-oriented power plants for the 21st century, combining clean exhaust emissions with an output of 125PS per liter of engine capacity.
Designed to achieve new levels in vibration and friction reduction, this compact, lightweight engine is equipped with the latest implementation of Honda's proprietary VTEC (Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control) technology, and produces a world-leading output of 250PS from a normally aspirated 2-liter engine. At the same time, the adoption of an exhaust secondary air system and a metal-type honeycomb catalytic converter has allowed for a reduction in CO, HC, and NOx emissions to some 50% of the upcoming 2000 Japanese exhaust emission standards, making sporty driving pleasure a socially acceptable pursuit.

This engine will be introduced in the S2000 model scheduled to be launched in Japan this spring.
