Hartley Fights Through from the Back of the Grid
Gasly was eliminated in a multi-car accident moments after the start. Hartley, who had suffered a heavy crash the previous day, recovered from the back of the grid to finish 12th.
Starting 12th, Gasly (Red Bull Toro Rosso Honda) was unable to avoid Romain Grosjean (Haas F1 Team)’s spinning car at Turn 3 and became involved in the same accident as Nico Hülkenberg (Renault Sport Formula One Team). His car sustained heavy damage and he retired after only a few corners, before he had the opportunity to build a race from a potentially points-scoring grid position.
Hartley (Red Bull Toro Rosso Honda) had been unable to take part in qualifying after a major accident in final practice and therefore started from the back. The team adjusted his tyre strategy during the early safety-car period, after which he maintained a consistent pace. Retirements and pit stops ahead allowed him to gain positions as the race developed.
Hartley finished 12th. Although the result did not bring points, reaching the finish rewarded the team’s work in rebuilding the car after Saturday’s accident. The first European round, however, did not provide a full assessment of the upgrades and further evaluation was required before Monaco.
The data gathered and lessons learned from the weekend were carried forward into setup refinements and power unit development for the next race.
