Research of the Technology for Reducing the Load of Yarding

Abstract

Satoyama provide a variety of services and are symbolic of the coexistence of people with nature, so their conservation is to be desired. HELLO WOODS’ is a facility that Honda maintains as a place for people to experience nature. Here, we perform conservation initiatives and receive benefits from the woods in return. This research uses HELLO WOODS’ as a case study in Satoyama conservation. Technology was developed to reduce the environmental burden of yarding; that is, moving trees after they have been logged (cut down). This technology uses a small crawler-type power carrier and has an unmanned carrier function, overturn suppression function through sloping areas and loading/unloading function. An experimental carrier was built and used to confirm that each function worked as required. These functions could reduce the burden created by yarding and help to conserve Satoyama.
