Abstract
Assuming the mass production of good appearance and high-strength plastic parts to be used on motorcycles, we studied the Heat and Cool (H&C) molding method to fabricate low-cost glass fiber reinforced polypropylene parts. In order to satisfy both molding cycle time and mold surface temperature uniformity requirements when temperature control piping are laid along a three-dimensional surface of a mold cavity, we used actual measurements made on test pieces to systematically define basic specifications for the piping arrangement. In addition, to deal with portions where an ideal piping design cannot be made, we developed a heat transfer simulation method that can effectively determine the surface temperature distribution of a mold cavity. With this, for a system that uses saturated steam from a boiler as the heating medium, it was indicated that a simple method to assume hot water for the heating medium can in fact be quite useful.
