Expansion of Statistical Tire Modeling Method to Tire Rolling Resistance Estimation

Abstract

The “statistical tire model” method, which is used for performance design in the early stages of vehicle development, was applied in order to expand its function to estimate the rolling resistance of tires just from the information of tire size and its inflation pressure. The influence of tire size on RRC became quantified by using measured rolling resistance of tires that have variation in both its sizes and inflation pressures yet that have the same structure and rubber compound. As a result, a model with good precision was obtained that can estimate the increase/decrease of the rolling resistance with respect to the reference tire if the tire size and its inflation pressure were given. The proposed model made it possible to conduct quantitative parameter studies without carrying out time consuming individual tire measurements.
