Initiative to Evaluate Effects of Atmospheric Impurities on PEM Fuel Cell Performance

Abstract

The effect of atmospheric impurity concentrations on fuel cell performance when a fuel cell vehicle runs in a real-life environment was evaluated by bench tests using an actual automotive cell. The effect of the concentrations of the gaseous atmospheric impurities SO2, H2S, NO2, and NH3 on fuel cell power over time was clarified. Comparison of nitrogen-based and sulfur-based impurities at the same concentrations revealed that sulfur-based impurities have a larger effect on power.Regarding the non-gaseous impurity NaCl, as sea salt also scatters in aerosol form, these evaluation results were compared with the results for the conventionally used aqueous solution. The results showed that the effect on power differs according to the injection format. Therefore, when performing bench evaluation of NaCl-based impurities, it is necessary to select an appropriate NaCl form that conforms to the assumed environment.
