A suspension system with variable characteristics

The EERA (Electrically Equipped Ride Adjustment) adopted in the CRF1100L The Africa Twin Adventure Sport ES instantly optimizes the damping force according to the suspension stroke speed and the vehicle's running condition while riding.
The suspension mode can be changed with the flick of a switch to suit various riding situations, from everyday riding to tandem touring and off-road.

The Engineer Talks

-This is a new item from the 2020 model.

This was the best item to take the “anywhere and everywhere” concept of the Africa Twin to the next level. After all, you can change the damping force whenever you want, however you want.

-What are the benefits of this?

When riding off-road, this system uses the softest setting possible to absorb the impact. If the hard setting is applied, the vehicle will lose ground contact and slide. On the other hand, when jumping and landing, the system increases the damping force to make the vehicle stand firm. The same applies to on-road riding. In situations where the force generated by the wheels is significant, the rider will have to hold on to the bike firmly in order to make a turn. In such cases, with conventional suspensions, riders are required to use the in-between setting, but the adoption of the electronic control system allows riding in the best setting for both situations.

-What were some of the difficulties in creating the electronic control?

I would rather say that the whole thing was a lot of work than just one part of it (laughs). I will walk you through the details when I move on to the IMU, which is the inertial sensor used for this control.

The EERA suspension mode can be selected from HARD, MID, SOFT, and OFFROAD (in addition, USER, which allows the rider to change the damping force and preload according to your preference).
The EERA has excellent responsiveness to instantly optimize the damping force according to the suspension stroke speed and the riding condition of the vehicle.
