The DCT in Closer Harmony with the Rider’s Feeling

The DCT in Closer Harmony with the Rider’s Feeling

By switching between two clutches, the DCT enables smooth and quick shifting with no interruption in driving force. It not only allows you to concentrate on tracing the driving line and acceleration/deceleration even off-road, but also spares you the worry of stalling. The 2020 model has been refined in terms of control to improve rideability even more.

The Engineer Talks

-What are some of the highlights of the new Africa Twin DCT?

“With the belief that the ideal manual transmission is one that allows the rider to shift gears as they please, I think we are now one step closer to that.”

-How so?

“The DCT made its debut with the VFR1200F in 2010, and we have been refining the control to be closer to human sensitivity.
Despite that, it is true that the choices that the DCT made had not always been “human-like”; it sometimes judged that the vehicle was moving in a straight line and therefore upshifted by itself, when it was actually cornering at a constant throttle position. Now we can detect the bank angle in real time by using the IMU (inertial sensor), and I think this has made it possible for us to shift gears in a more sensible way.”
