Vandoorne Scores Points on His F1 Debut with 10th Place
Stoffel Vandoorne, standing in for the injured Fernando Alonso, finished 10th on his F1 debut to score McLaren Honda’s first championship points of the 2016 season.
Vandoorne (McLaren Honda) started from 12th on the grid. Although several cars came together approaching Turn 1, he avoided the opening-lap incident and maintained his position. He then completed all four stints without encountering any major problems, executing several confident overtaking moves on the cars ahead. Displaying consistent pace and remarkable composure in his first F1 race, he took the checkered flag in 10th place.
Meanwhile, Button (McLaren Honda) was running strongly inside the top 10 when a sudden power unit issue struck early in the race. He pulled into a run-off area and retired on Lap 7. While Vandoorne’s points finish secured the team’s first championship points of the season, Button’s retirement highlighted the need for further improvements in reliability.
Making his F1 debut as Alonso’s replacement, Vandoorne remained composed throughout the race, managing his tires well and securing 10th place. Button retired early with an ERS-related issue, but Vandoorne delivered McLaren Honda’s first points of the season.
The data gathered and lessons learned from the weekend were carried forward into setup refinements and power unit development for the next race.
