Overview of next-generation functions

Advanced In Lane Driving with Hands-off Function

The system utilizes high-definition maps and the global navigation satellite system (GNSS) data to accurately identify the vehicle position and assist the driving even when the driver has their hands off the steering wheel (hands-off function).

The system operates accelerating, braking and steering even while the driver has their hands off the steering wheel. The system drives the vehicle along the center of the lane while maintaining the pre-set vehicle speed. When there is a car ahead, the system assists in following while maintaining a proper following distance. For turning, the system detects the curvature of the lane in advance and performs deceleration and acceleration before and after the curve to assist the driver in the way that they can driver with a peace of mind.

Advanced Lane Change with Hands-off Function

While driving using the Advanced In Lane Driving with Hands-off Function and the Advanced Lane Change is switched on, when the system detects a slow moving car ahead, the system determines if a lane change is possible depending on the vehicle’s surroundings. When it determines the lane change is possible, the system notifies the driver and then assists the passing and returning to the original lane by controlling the turn signal, accelerating/decelerating and steering with hands-off.
The system also assists the driver in changing lanes close to junctions or exits while driving toward the destination set with the navigation system. The system also assists the lane changes when the number of lanes will be reducing, and the lane the vehicle is on will disappear. This function will reduce the driver’s anxiety and tension associated with these situations.

Driver Emergency Support System

When the driver falls into an abnormal condition and/or continues to be unresponsive to the system’s requests for a handover (the transfer of control back to the driver), the system alerts the driver with warnings. If the driver remains unresponsive, the system assists deceleration and stopping of the vehicle within the same lane while alerting other road users around the vehicle using hazard lights and the horn. Furthermore, the system connects to the emergency support center.

Exit Warning

While the vehicle is parked, when the system detects a vehicle approaching from the rear, the indicator on the front pillar or side mirror lights up to assist occupants to recognize an approaching vehicle. When the system detects the risk of a collision between a vehicle door that occupants open/attempt to open and other vehicles passing by, an indicator flashes and an audible alarm sounds to alert the occupants.

Technology to detect the driver’s condition and risk factors to assist frontal collision avoidance

The system detects the driver’s conditions and risk factors for frontal collisions, and if there is a possibility that the driver is driving with diminishing attention, the system warns the driver and assists safe driving. If the driver continues to drive with diminishing attention, and there is the risk of a collision, the system assists with collision avoidance.

1) Driver Attention Warning and Collision Warning

When there is the risk of a collision with a pedestrian, bicycle or vehicle, and if the system determines that there is a possibility that the driver is driving with diminishing attention, the system reduces the vehicle speed and assists the steering to keep the vehicle inside the lane. It also alerts the driver to restore attention and support safe driving.

2) Emergency Steering Support Technology and In-Lane Collision Avoidance Assist Technology

When there is the risk of a collision with a pedestrian, bicycle or vehicle, and the system determines that there is not enough space within the lane traveled by the vehicle to avoid a collision, the system takes the driver’s steering operation as a cue and assists the steering while reducing vehicle speed to assist collision avoidance.

When the system determines that there is enough space within the lane traveled by the vehicle to avoid a collision, the system continues reducing the vehicle speed within the lane and steers the vehicle away from the possible collision to assist collision avoidance within the lane.

■ Honda SENSING and Honda SENSING 360 are driver-assistive systems, so there is a limit to the capabilities (e.g. recognition capability and control capability) of their individual functions. Please do not overestimate the capabilities of each function and drive safely while paying constant attention to the vehicle’s surroundings.
Each system may not work or may not perform adequately depending on road conditions, weather conditions and vehicle conditions.
