Honda Running Team Member, Nagiya Mori, Wins and Sets New Japanese National Record in Men’s 3000m at the Seiko Golden Grand Prix 2026 Tokyo
TOKYO, Japan, May 20, 2026 – Honda Motor Co., Ltd. (Honda) today announced that a member of the Honda Running Team, Nagiya Mori, claimed victory and set a new Japanese national record of 7 minutes 38.98 seconds in the Men's 3000m at the Seiko Golden Grand Prix 2026 Tokyo held at MUFG Stadium (Japan National Stadium) on Sunday, May 17, 2026. The Japanese men's 3000m record was broken for the first time in 11 years and 8 months since September 2014.
The Seiko Golden Grand Prix is an international athletics competition organized by the Japan Association of Athletics Federations. Mori steadily moved up in position from the middle stages of the race, then unleashed his trademark explosive finishing kick on the final lap, surging past the runners ahead to win a fiercely contested race.
After making his global championship debut at the World Athletics Championships Tokyo 25 and delivering a strong first-leg performance at this year’s New Year Ekiden to give his team early momentum, Mori has steadily elevated his performance level. His victory at this international competition, featuring some of the world’s top athletes, marked the first international title of his career.
Based on the Honda vision for its sports activities – “To increase the number of people who take on challenges through sports activities and make the lives of people more enjoyable everywhere in the world” – Honda will continue to support various athletes who take on challenges toward the realization of their own dreams.
Comments by Nagiya Mori, Honda Running Team Member
“I’m very pleased to have achieved both my target of setting a Japanese national record and winning the race. During the race, I focused on identifying the right moment to make a move, and I was able to launch my kick from the final corner and secure the win. I would like to thank everyone for their warm support. I will continue working hard toward winning my first title in the Men’s 5000m at the Japan National Athletics Championships in June.”
