Electrical System Development for American Le Mans Racing

Abstract

The electrical system developed for the American Le Mans Series (ALMS) racing car, used a modular approach for both the engine control unit complete with associated satellite components and the interface and management of 3rd party devices. The basis of the system applied the modular approach by expanding the base engine control system; while still allowing continual development of the engine including different injectors and sensors, with optimized peripheral units for the different engine hardware.Within the control system a shift to model-based code and simulation for software test and validation was developed and implemented. This resulted in the ability to provide strategies at an average of three times the rate compared with the previous system, and ultimately providing the higher efficiency of overall system application to changing targets.
