Assisting the driver with steering when making a lane
change on an expressway
The Active Lane Change Assist is a function where the system assists the
driver with steering operation when making a lane change. Without this
function, the driver needs to operate the vehicle in three steps to make
a lane change: 1) check traffic behind and beside the vehicle, 2) put on
the turn signal, and 3) operate the steering. The Active Lane Change
Assist reduced the driver burden while making a lane change.
How it works
For the Active Lane Change Assist to be activated, the system has to
recognize that the vehicle is being driven on a regular lane of an
expressway while having both Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) and the Lane
Keeping Assist System (LKAS) turned on. When the driver lightly pulls the
turn signal lever a single tone is heard, indicating that the system has
determined the driver requested a lane change based on the Active Lane
Change Assist function and provides steering assist after checking the
vehicle's surroundings.
The driver Holds it until the single tone comes
on.
Using the camera and radars, the system checks
the adjustment lanes for safety.
The system provides steering assist to make a
lane change.
When the driver requests a lane change by putting on the turn signal, the
system uses the camera and radars to check the vehicle’s surroundings and
determines whether a lane change can be made safely. If the system
determines it is possible, it begins assisting the driver with steering
operation. Once the lane change is completed, the Lane Keeping Assistance
System (LKAS) gets re-activated, and the system assists the driver with
steering to keep the vehicle near the middle of the lane.
On the other hand, if the system detects a vehicle approaching from behind at
a higher speed and determines that it is not possible to make a lane change
safely, it alerts the driver to the presence of the vehicle, abandons the
lane change and keeps the vehicle in the current lane.
The system provides seamless steering assist for both lane keeping and lane
change, which reduces the driver burden during a long drive and enables the
driver to focus on safe driving.
Commitment of Honda
The steering assist provided by the system could lead to driver discomfort if
the car is moving too slowly or too fast. Honda has tailored the system to
make lane changes which feel natural and comfortable for the vehicle
occupants.

The individual functions of the driver-assistive
system have limited capabilities (e.g. recognition capability and
control capability). Please do not overestimate the capabilities of
any function and drive safely while paying constant attention to the
vehicle’s surroundings.
A system may not work or perform adequately depending on road
conditions, weather conditions and vehicle conditions.
Depending on the model and timing of the market
launch of the model, descriptions provided on this page and the
actual functions available on customers’ vehicles may be different.
For the functions available for each vehicle, please check the
owners’ manual of the respective vehicle.
