Barefoot-Friendly Beaches for Future Generations: 20-years of Honda’s Beach Clean-Up Activity Driven by the Power of Technology and People

POINTWhat you can learn from this article

  • Honda’s beach clean-up activity began with a desire to use ATV (All-Terrain Vehicle) technology to make a positive contribution to society.
  • The program expanded nationwide following its official recognition in 2006, fostering environmental awareness among future generations through the belief that technology should support people.
  • Honda is working to pass on clean, barefoot-friendly beaches to future generations through the combined power of people and technology.

In 1999, Honda engineers visiting a coastline as part of an ATV (All-Terrain Vehicle) market survey were confronted by a beach covered in washed-up litter.

“Could ATVs be used to help?”

Inspired by a desire to use technology to make a positive contribution to society, Honda’s beach clean-up activity began from this simple question. Officially launched as a social contribution program in 2006, Honda’s beach clean-up activity celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2026. Over the past two decades, the program has been held 484 times at 222 locations across Japan, engaging approximately 80,000 participants and collecting 592 tons of litter.

In this issue of Honda Stories, members of Honda’s Social Contribution Promotion Division and engineers responsible for equipment development explain why Honda has continued its commitment to passing on barefoot-friendly beaches to future generations.

ATV development: the origins of Honda’s beach clean-up activity

Honda’s beach clean-up activity traces its origins to a coastline visited during an ATV market survey in 1999. Team members still recall the shock of seeing a beach covered with large amounts of washed-up litter.

The idea for Beach Clean-Up came from engineers working on ATV development who wondered whether ATVs, which can travel across sandy beaches, could be used to make a positive contribution.

Mr.Inoue

The initiative began as part of equipment development testing using ATVs at Honda’s Asaka R&D Center. Through extensive discussions among volunteer members, the team developed a system that combined ATVs with proprietary equipment such as sand rakes and sand cleaners, allowing litter to be collected by towing the equipment across the beach.

Guided by Honda’s belief in using technology to help society, the goal was to create a way to collect small pieces of litter that are difficult to pick up by hand.

The development process, however, involved repeated setbacks.

Through continuous trial and error on beaches across Japan, the team finally completed the prototype of today’s beach clean-up equipment around 2003, capable of lifting small pieces of litter from the sand.

These efforts laid the foundation for Honda’s beach clean-up activity that continues today.

Expanding the reach of Honda’s beach clean-up activity following official recognition

As the activities continued, requests from local communities asking Honda to return became increasingly common, making it difficult for volunteers alone to meet demand. A major turning point came in 2006, when the initiative was officially recognized by Honda as a corporate social contribution activity under the name Honda Beach Clean-Up Activity.

In the beginning, employees and retirees formed a traveling team that visited beaches around Japan. Later, support expanded to include Honda factories and parts suppliers. Today, Honda Cars dealerships across the country play a central role in supporting the program.

The response has been tremendous, and the number of events has continued to grow. More recently, schools have participated as part of classroom programs, helping strengthen ties with local communities. It is rewarding to know that these activities can encourage people to think more deeply about the environment.

Behind 20 years of Honda’s beach clean-up activity lies a shared desire to use technology to benefit society, supported by the passion and commitment of many people.

An environmental activity supported by Honda’s people-centric technology

Throughout its 20-year history, Honda has remained committed to the belief that technology should serve to support people.

People are the driving force behind this activity. The ultimate goal is to foster an awareness that litter should not be discarded and should be picked up when found. By combining people’s efforts with Honda products and technologies such as ATVs and beach cleaners, the program helps address local environmental challenges. Children who participate often begin sorting waste at home on their own. Through the experience of cleaning a beach, people gradually change the way they think about nature and the environment. Creating that opportunity is one of the most important roles of this activity.

Another reason the program has continued for more than two decades is Honda’s unwavering commitment to safety.

As Honda engineers, safety is always the highest priority. We place great emphasis on creating a safe environment through pre-event training and a proprietary licensing system. Children who become interested in the equipment sometimes suggest ways it could be improved. It would be rewarding if these experiences inspire some of them to become future engineers.

To further encourage environmental awareness among children, Honda is also developing equipment specifically for younger participants. In addition to the existing beach cleaners used by adults, a mini sand rake can be towed by a TRX90, allowing children to experience the excitement of mobility while participating in beach clean-up.

Beyond beach clean-up: Honda’s vision for barefoot-friendly beaches

Looking ahead, Honda envisions a future where companies no longer need to lead beach clean-up activities. The ultimate goal is a world where everyone can walk barefoot on clean beaches with confidence.

As environmental awareness grows through beach clean-up activities, more people will pick up litter when they find it and dispose of it properly. That will help create beaches where people can walk barefoot. Children who participate today will become adults and pass those values on to future generations. Creating that cycle is what gives this activity its value.

Mr.Inoue and Mr.Watanabe

From a development perspective, Inoue also sees the need to respond to emerging environmental challenges.

Challenges continue to evolve every year, whether it is addressing microplastics or responding to environmental changes caused by climate change. Honda will continue exploring how technology can contribute to solving these issues.

Honda’s beach clean-up activity is about using technology to support people, empowering people to take action, and creating opportunities to think about the future. That is the true value of the program. Guided by the vision of passing on barefoot-friendly beaches to future generations, Honda’s challenge will continue through the combined power of people and technology.
