The Honda Soichiro Cup Honda Eco Mileage Challenge, a traditional car race sponsored by Honda, has been held since 1981 to compete in fuel efficiency, not speed. This year, a carbon-neutral fuel class was newly established.
This year’s competition, in which outstanding fuel efficiency results were recorded, was documented in Honda’s first two-and-a-half-hour working video.
Honda Eco Mileage Challenge (EMC) held again this year
The Honda Soichiro Cup Honda Eco Mileage Challenge is a car race sponsored by Honda that has been held since 1981, which is won by fuel economy, not speed, in cars built by the contestants. They drive around a circuit at an average speed of 25 km/h (15.53 mph) to see who can finish using the least amount of fuel.
Two teams were the winners in the 43rd national competition held in October 2024. In the carbon-neutral fuel class, which was newly established this year, Team Fireball won with a fuel consumption of 2,516 km/L (5,918 mpg, equivalent to the distance between Aichi, the team’s hometown, to Guam. In the high-octane class, the Suiyo Club (Wednesday Club) won for the second consecutive year, recording 3,010 km/L (7,080 mpg), equivalent to the distance between Tokyo and Manila.

Honda releases first working video “Lofi by Honda” capturing charm of the competition
To spread the word about this competition, in which engineers of the future, from students to working professionals, compete to achieve outstanding fuel efficiency, Honda released a 2.5 hour long video, the longest in Honda’s history. This competition is a team effort, with vehicles at a leisurely pace piloted by drivers challenging for extreme fuel efficiency, backed-up by large numbers of engineers.
The seemingly relaxed race hides its true nature of strong feelings and passions.
This edition of Honda Stories depicts the charm of the EMC, a quiet yet passionate competition, with visuals of colorful cars driving gently, accompanied by original music newly written by Lofi. We hope you will find this video inspiring when you are working hard toward your goals, or soothing when you are taking a break or spending time with your friends.
Honda staff comments
The idea of a long Lofi video of the EMC came during a conversation with colleagues. The video is a really Chill, with colorful, uniquely shaped small cars moving slowly at a leisurely pace, by participants who worked hard to build their cars to maximize fuel efficiency. We hope this video will convey the charm and awesomeness of the Honda Eco Mileage Challenge to as many people as possible.

When I first heard about this project of matching working background music to a video of students competing for fuel efficiency with their own cars, I thought it was crazy, but before I knew it, I was captivated by the surreal visuals of cars gliding on a magnificent circuit. I expressed the comfortable pace and the students’ quiet passion with ‘80s city pop and retro chill beats. I hope my music, as background music, helps people along their way toward their dreams and goals.
