Corporate

TOKYO, Japan, June 1, 2012 - Honda Motor Co., Ltd. today disclosed results of the recycling/recovering of 1) fluorocarbons, 2) airbags, 3) Automobile Shredder Residue (ASR) based on Japan's End-of-Life Vehicle (ELV) Recycling Law for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2012.

  • The number of ELVs from which fluorocarbons were collected was approximately 320,000 units (a decrease of 16% compared to the preceding fiscal year).
  • The number of ELVs from which airbags were collected was approximately 240,000 units (a decrease of 6% compared to the preceding fiscal year).
  • The number of ELVs from which ASR was collected as the final stage of the ELV treatment was approximately 370,000 units (a decrease of 20% compared to the preceding fiscal year).
  • The recycling rate of airbag inflators and ASR was 93.6% and 93.3%, respectively, complying with the ordinances of the relevant ministries (85% for airbag inflators and 70% for ASR by the fiscal year ending March 31, 2016).
  • The total cost of the recycling efforts amounted to 3.48 billion yen, which was 290 million yen less than the total recycling deposits received which was 3.77 billion yen.

Honda will continue its efforts to ensure proper treatment of ELVs and further increase recycling rates.

Facilities which conform to the standards for treatment of ASR

For more information about the standard-conforming ASR treatment facilities Honda used, please refer to the website of TOYOTSU Recycle Corporation:

  • *1A method of airbag recycling in which airbags are removed from the vehicle to collect inflators. Then, inflators are recycled at a designated recycling facility.
  • *2A method of airbag recycling in which airbags are deployed while they are still on the vehicle.
  • *3The total weight of ASR recycle will not be matched with the total of each items due to rounding errors.
  • *4Airbag recycling rate = weight of metal collected/weight of inflators collected
  • *5
ASR recycling rate
= Weight of ASR taken in to recycling facilities -
Weight of residue emitted from the recycling facilities + Weight of ASR that would have been generated if not given to licensed 3rd party whole resource recycling company - Weight of residue emitted from licensed dismantlers or shredders
