June 13, 2007 - Honda Motor Co., Ltd. is strengthening efforts to reduce its environmental footprint for a wider range of business activities by setting eight voluntary targets for its business activities in Japan, which Honda will strive to meet by fiscal year 2010 (ending March 31, 2011).
<Outline of 2010 Environmental Footprint Reduction Target for Business Activities in Japan>
1. Energy Saving and Anti-Global Warming Measures
1-1. Target for CO2 emissions reductions from logistics activities |
- Honda will strive to reduce CO2 emissions from its logistics activities by 10% per sales revenue (compared with the fiscal year ended March 31, 2007) through improvements in transportation efficiency achieved by ensuring eco-driving by trucking companies, expanding a modal shift toward shipments by rail and ship, and reducing transportation distances by consolidating logistics bases.
2. Reduction of Substances with Environmental Impact
2-1. Reduction of VOC emissions for painting processes at auto production plants |
- By further promoting use of water-based paints and achieving thorough improvements in efficiency and waste reduction, such as improvements in coating efficiency, Honda will reduce VOC emissions by 35% per painted area of automobile body (compared with the fiscal year ended March 31, 2001).
3. Recycling of Resources
3-1. Zero landfill disposal for overall business activities |
- Honda will strive to achieve the target of zero landfill for all 48 major consolidated entities by strictly enforcing waste segregation and by increasing its recycling rate.
|
3-2. Reductions in waste and water use at production facilities of Honda Motor Co., Ltd. |
- Honda will reduce the amount of waste generated (including by-products) by 10% (per sales revenue, compared with the fiscal year ended March 31, 2001) through improvements in production process yields and efforts to reduce, reuse and recycle resources including the reduction of cast metal sand waste and other areas.
- Honda will also reduce water use by 30% (per sales revenue, compared with the fiscal year ended March 31, 2001) by promoting conservation and the recycling of water.
|
3-3. Reductions in the use of packaging material |
- Honda will reduce the amount of packaging materials used by 45% (per sales revenue, compared with the fiscal year ended March 31, 2001) by adopting simple packaging, changing packaging specifications, and shifting from disposable packaging materials to returnable packaging materials.
|
3-4. Improvements in the end-of-life automobile recycling rate |
- Automobiles : By increasing use of certified recycling facilities and expanding application of full recycling methods, Honda will target to achieve an ASR recycling rate of 70% or more (five years ahead of the schedule stipulated by the End-of-Life Vehicle Recycling Law in Japan)
- Motorcycles : Honda will aim for recycling rate of 95% or more by 2015.
Further, as background, last year (May 17, 2006) Honda became the first automaker in the world to announce global CO2 reduction goals for its products and production activities. Progress toward these targets will be disclosed through the Honda Environmental Annual Report and the Honda website. The Honda Environmental Annual Report 2007 will be issued in late June 2007.
