Red Flag in Closing Stages of Qualifying Denies Final Opportunity to Improve

On June 3, the Aston Martin Aramco Formula One™ Team (AMAF1) unveiled a special livery for the Monaco Grand Prix. Created in collaboration with principal partner Maaden, the design represents the journey of metals and minerals from extraction deep underground to their transformation into high-performance engineering products. The livery features a special wrap material that changes color depending on the angle of the light. Both AMAF1 cars will compete in Monaco carrying the “From Rock to Racetrack” theme.

The FIA also introduced special regulations for the Monaco Grand Prix, including a ban on the use of active aerodynamics and restrictions on electric motor output.

Qualifying for Round 6, the Monaco Grand Prix, took place on Saturday, June 6. The two AMAF1 drivers completed extensive running during FP1, FP2, and FP3, but difficulties in improving drivability continued to make for a challenging weekend.

Under clear skies and in front of packed grandstands, qualifying began at 4:00 pm local time with ambient temperatures of 24°C and track temperatures of 47°C.

In the 18-minute Q1 session, Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll headed out as soon as the session began. Alonso set his best lap of 1 min 15.349s on his second set of tires. With two minutes remaining, the session was red-flagged following an incident involving another car. Although Alonso was able to complete a final run after the restart, he was unable to improve his time.

Stroll recorded his best lap of 1 min 16.061s on his first run. He attempted to improve on his second set of tires but was unable to better his time. Following the red flag, he returned to the track, but the timing was just too late to begin a final flying lap before the session ended.

Alonso finished Q1 in 21st place and Stroll in 22nd, leaving both drivers to start the Monaco Grand Prix from the back of the grid.

Fernando Alonso

“There wasn't a big difference compared to yesterday and we just don't have the pace. We had some hopes coming here to Monaco, but we don't have much confidence in the car and have had a lack of front grip all weekend. I thought I did the best laps possible today with this current package.”

Lance Stroll

“We've struggled with the same issues all weekend – the car has been tricky with no grip, so this result was expected. The team has been trying various changes between sessions, but we're limited with downforce and power, so it's not much fun out there.”

Mike Krack, AMAF1 Chief Trackside Officer

“Today's Qualifying result reflects our pace. We have not managed to give the drivers a predictable car, which is essential on this track, and we have struggled to build tire temperature. Let's see if there are opportunities tomorrow: Monaco is a long race with plenty of action where anything can happen.”

Shintaro Orihara, Trackside General Manager and Chief Engineer

“We expected a better qualifying result here in Monaco before coming to the track. We need to work hard to improve performance of the package overall, and this is what we have been doing since FP1. We tried to do this through drivability and giving the drivers more confidence to carry more speed into the corners. However, the effort hasn’t been enough to get a better grid position for the Monaco Grand Prix. We know we need to improve more for the future but, in the race tomorrow, something can always happen, so we will prepare for all scenarios to react correctly.”
