Sepang International Circuit, Malaysia, December 14, 2019

The start of Round 2 of the 2019-2020 FIM Endurance World Championship (EWC), the inaugural 8 Hours of Sepang, was delayed due to several hours of heavy rain. After the 50 teams finished their reconnoissance lap, Race Direction made the announcement, and after the team managers' meeting, the race started at 3:05pm led by the safety car, only to be halted 8 laps later.

Once the race restarted at 6:00pm, pole-sitter Yamaha Sepang Racing (#21) and third-place F.C.C. TSR Honda France (#5) were in a heated battle for the lead, so much so that they crashed into each other. Mike Di Meglio (F.C.C. TSR Honda France), first rider after the restart, recovered, and pitted for the first time. The pit crew, with components lined up to fix any conceivable problem, went to work at once, but the damage was thankfully light, and Di Meglio was back on the track for a double stint.

Di Meglio, who kept the team in the lead for the best part of the race, fell with one hour remaining. After returning to the pits and 8 long minutes of repairs, Freddy Foray took over the bike and was back on track in 28th position, but fought hard to recover positions. With half an hour left, Foray was within the points in 20th, and on the final lap overtook two riders to finish the race 13th.

Honda Asia-Dream Racing with SHOWA (#88) was the best Honda performer, finishing on the podium in 2nd place. Team riders Zaqhwan Zaidi, Andi Izdihar and Somkiat Chantra were second fastest in Qualifying, and rode an outstanding race.

The EWC moves to Europe next, for the 24 Hours of Le Mans, on April 18 - 19, 2020.

Somkiat Chantra | Honda Asia-Dream Racing with SHOWA (2nd)

"Hi I’m Somkiat, today difficult for me because start in wet condition with safety car and got red flag then restart again with Zaqhwan. Today race only for 3 hours with only me and Zaqhwan ride to keep our momentum. While riding I only want to did my best and no mistake then thank you to my team to did good job and hard work all the weekend thank you."

Makoto Tamada | Honda Asia-Dream Racing with SHOWA (2nd) Team Manager

"Thank you very much to all, this result I’m very happy because this is high world class level, so this result means our rider and mechanic coming improve their ability step by step. Over the others thing, without all support from sponsor this can’t be happened. Anyways, we will continue work hard for next year to get Champion in ARRC and important to get best result in Suzuka 8hours. Thanks to all."

Mike Di Meglio |F.C.C. TSR Honda France(13th)

"The results are very disappointing. We were fighting hard from the start, and it was very difficult. I crashed once during a battle, but we managed to keep the lead. The double-stint was planned, and once we caught up and overtook our competitors I pushed even more, but I crashed again. In the end, Freddy [Foray] brought up back into the points, and I’m also grateful for the team and F.C.C.’s ASEAN section for their support. I’m looking forward to making amends at Le Mans."

Freddy Foray|F.C.C. TSR Honda France(13th)

"Mike [Di Meglio]’s double-stint from the start was superb. After the crash and rider swap, I focused on getting even one place ahead. Every day was tough this race week, and although we scored championship points, it a good race. Still, that’s racing, and I’m looking forward to racing the new bike at Le Mans. I can’t wait to test the new bike!"
