Zaidi Second Win of the Season in China Race 1

Zhuhai International Circuit, China, August 11, 2019

Round 5 of the 2019 Asia Road Racing Championship was held at the Zhuhai International Circuit in China. The inaugural round started under hot conditions with ambient temperatures reaching 36℃ on a track that hit 58℃. Md. Zaqhwan Zaidi (Honda Asia-Dream Racing with SHOWA) overcame the heat to mark the fastest times in all three practice sessions. Despite falling during the third session, he was not injured, and on a quickly repaired bike, proceeded to Qualifying.

As the track temperature reached 61℃, Zaidi bettered his lap time in Qualifying, but pole position went to Broc Parkes (Yamaha) who was slightly faster with 1 min 33s994 as opposed to the Malaysian's 1 min 34s121. Azlan Shah Kamaruzaman (BMW) was 3rd fastest, with Yuki Ito (Yamaha) 4th, Thitipong Warokorn (Kawasaki) 5th, and capping off the riders in the 1 min 34s range, Apiwath Wongthananon (Yamaha) 6th.

Zaidi was off to a strong start in Race 1, leading and pulling away. Behind him in order were Ito and Warokorn, soon to be caught by Parkes. Of the four riders fighting for the lead, Zaidi and Ito pull away from Warokorn and Parkes, who are left to battle for 3rd. Zaidi outpaces Ito, in the end takes the checkered flag for his second win of the season.

Despite the track temperature falling to 51℃ in Race 2, the heat was nonetheless punishing. Once again Zaidi takes the holeshot, and leads the race. Kamaruzaman, Parkes, and Ito chase, and despite Zaidi trying to distance himself, he leads a tight pack of seven riders. Zaidi fends off a determined Kamaruzaman at many turns as the lead group is reduced to five riders. On Lap 3, Parkes, who had overtaken Kamaruzaman, closed in on Zaidi. The two frontrunners pull away from the other riders, leaving Kamaruzaman, Ito and Warakorn to fight for 3rd. On Lap 6, Parkes takes the lead, and the fight for third closes in on Zaidi. Two laps later, Parkes increases his lead, and Kamaruzaman, overtaking Zaidi for 2nd place, chases. Ito, now 4th, also closes in on Zaidi. On Lap 10, Zaidi retakes 2nd from Kamaruzaman and chases the race leader. Despite a fierce battle on the last lap, Zaidi loses out to Kamaruzaman and Ito, ending his race 4th.

Zaidi is currently ranked 2nd in the championship with 153 points, chasing Parkes. He aims to catch and surpass Parkes in the remaining two rounds.

Comments

Md. Zaqhwan Zaidi | Honda Asia-Dream Racing with SHOWA (1st / 4th)

"I was fastest in all of the practice sessions, and my feeling was good. I fell in FP3, but the team quickly fixed the bike, so I was well prepared for Qualifying. The competition were also getting faster, so I stayed focused. I qualified 2nd, but the race is what counts, so I kept up my concentration. I won Race 1, moving me up in the championship. I fought hard on the final lap in Race 2, I wasn't positioned well, nearly crashed, and missed out on a podium finish. I sorry that I couldn't do better for the team. The next round is at my home track, so I'll give it everything to take the double win."

Makoto Tamada | Honda Asia-Dream Racing with SHOWA Team Manager

"Zaidi did well in free practice under scorching conditions, managing to finish each session on top. He had a crash in FP3, but it was not a big problem, and we were able to test the bike thoroughly afterwards. I think it was good that we kept his motivation up by the team supporting him in a quick manner. He did a great job in Race 1 to win. In Race 2, he tried to keep his momentum, but lost a few positions at the end. We'll analyze the results as a team, and move forward. The next round is at his home track, so we'll prepare well to aim for the double win."

In Race 1, Sucipto takes the holeshot and leads. Andy Muhammad Fadly (Kawasaki) chases, and soon overtakes Sucipto. Behind the two is Anggi Setiawan (Yamaha). A string of 15 riders all vying for the lead turns into a tough battle with places changing constantly. Ardiansyah emerges from the pack, chased by Fadli and Hendriansya, who gets ahead of Fadli. Sanjaya manages to take the lead in the confusion, and for a while, six or seven riders were in contention. But, soon the chasing group caught up, making the battle for supremacy a 13-way ordeal. Sucipto manages to pull ahead, followed by Sanjaya, Ardiansyah, Hendriansya and Fadli, who ferociously try to keep ahead of each other, changing positions to the very end. With the four riders side-by-side, Sucipto crossed the line first, followed by Sanjaya and Ardiansyah. Hendriansya just missed the podium, finishing 4th, but helped to give Honda the top 4 positions. Sarapuech finished 6th, and Patoomyos 7th.

In Race 2, Sucipto once again was fastest off the mark, but is caught by Buasri. They are both caught by the chasing group. Soon Fadli takes the lead, followed by Sanjaya, Ardiansyah, Sucipto, Hendriansya, Buasri and Sarapuech, with only a fraction of a second separating them. Hendriansya manages to take the lead, but cannot keep it safe from Buasri, Ardiansyah and Sarapuech. With three laps remaining, Sarapuech moves ahead and makes a last charge, but is overtaken by Sanjaya. Sarapuech regains the lead into the last lap, but the race is still a close call between 15 riders. Sanjaya takes back the lead, but crashes, along with Sarapuech and Buasri. Sucipto wins, Ardiansyah is 2nd, and Patoomyos is 3rd. Once again Honda dominates the podium. Hendriansya crosses the line a close 4th, and Rajiv finishes 10th. Sucipto took the double win, and Honda took the Top 4 in both races.

With two rounds (four races) to go, Fadli leads the title battle with 145 points. Ardiansyah is only 5 points behind.

Comments

"I'm thrilled with the results. I took pole position, and won both races. I fell back a bit in Race 1, but managed to get back ahead and win. In Race 2, I just concentrated on winning. My ranking isn't high, so I'm not racing for the championship, but I'll do my best in the remaining races."

Irfan Ardiansyah | Astra Honda Racing Team (3rd / 2nd)

"The was an incident on the last lap, but I kept looking ahead. I'm glad because I was on the podium in both races, 3rd in Race 1 and 2nd in Race 2. I'm also glad I finished ahead of Fadli, who is also fighting for the championship. I'll do my best at the next race, and try to win the championship."
