Madras Motor Race Track, India, August 5, 2018

Round 4 of the 2018 Asia Road Racing Championship (ARRC) went to the Madras Motor Race Track in Chennai, India. Teammates for the Suzuka 8 Hours, Md Zaqhwan Zaidi (MuSASHi Boon Siew Honda) and Andi Farid Izdihar (Astra Honda Racing Team), and Tomoyoshi Koyama (Musashi Boon Siew) had no time to recuperate from the gruesome endurance race in Japan.

In Qualifying, Anthony West (Yamaha) took pole. Koyama was 2nd, Zaidi 3rd. All front row riders lapped in the 1 min 40s range. Taiga Hada (Idemitsu Honda Racing India by T.Pro Ten10) scored his best qualifying of the season, 6th on the grid, while Keisuke Kurihara (A.P. Honda Racing Thailand) would start the race 14th.

Despite light showers beforehand, Race 1 started on schedule, with Koyama taking the holeshot. He keeps the lead for a while, but is overtaken by Hada. Decha Kraisart (Yamaha), Zaidi, West and Izdihar are close behind.

Hada tries to put a gap between himself and the other riders, but Zaidi passes Koyama and Kraisart, and now in 3rd, is closing in. West overtakes Zaidi and approaches Koyama, and the battle for the lead intensifies. Azlan Shah Kamaruzaman (Kawasaki) gradually merges into the top group, setting the stage for a 7-way fight between Hada, Koyama, Wesst, Zaidi, Kraisart, Izdihar, and Kamaruzaman.

Mid-race, as the skies clears and track conditions stabilized, the battle between Hada and Koyama reached a fevered pitch. The two seemingly pulled away from the pack, but the others were not going to give up without a fight, and the lead group kept strung together.

Behind Hada and Koyama in front were West and Zaidi. Determined to catch them, Kraisart and Kamaruzaman collided, taking them out of contention.

West then not only joins Hada and Koyama in the battle for the lead, but gets ahead. Azroy Hakeem Anuar (Musashi Boon Siew Honda) catches the lead group, and the battle is now a 6 bike ordeal. Hada and West intensify their fight, and neither outclasses the other lap after lap. Zaidi and Koyama, vying for 3rd, close in on the two race leaders.

In the closing stages, West pulls away from Hada, and Zaidi edges ahead of Koyama for 3rd. Behind them, Izdihar, Anuar are closing in. Zaidi gets ahead of Hada, and now in 2nd, chases West. Behind them, Hada, Koyama and Izdihar fight for 3rd into the final lap.

West manages to keep ahead, crossing the line for the win. Zaidi is 2nd, and Hada a well-earned 3rd. Izdihar is 4th, Koyama 5th, Anuar 6th and Kurihara 10th.

In Race 2, Koyama once again takes the holeshot, but Zaidi and Hada are close behind. West moves up to 2nd, closes in on Koyama, and takes the lead. Anuar crashes and retires on the opening lap.

West is first, Hada 2nd. Behind them are Koyama, Zaidi and Kraisart, and these five battle to lead. Kamaruzaman catches the leaders, making it six. Hada, Koyama and Zaidi fend each other off, while they chase West.

A 1.2s gap between West and Hada increased as West tries to pull away, setting the fastest lap. Yuki Ito (Yamaha) then joins in the fight for 2nd, and the top group now is a 4-bike ordeal. Hada overtakes West to take the lead, but soon gives it back to West.

West gradually increases his pace to build a comfortable lead, with Zaidi, Hada, Ito and Koyama battling for 2nd, into the last 5 laps. Koyama takes Ito and Hada, and now 3rd, is right behind Zaidi. Hada also pushes, and takes 3rd place back from Koyama, and the battle between Zaidi, Hada, Koyama and Ito continues.

With his comfortable lead, West takes the double win. Koyama is 2nd, Hada 3rd, and Zaidi crosses the line 4th. Kurihara was 12th.

Comments

Taiga Hada | Idemitsu Honda Racing India by T.Pro Ten10 (3rd / 3rd)

“My results were so bad in the first half of the season, but today we improved the setup, and I’m glad I was on the podium. I’m really, really glad. I’ll keep this momentum up, and aim to win in the remaining rounds in Indonesia and Thailand. I’m so grateful to the team.”

Md Zaqhwan Zaidi | Musashi Boon Siew Honda (2nd / 4th)

“Race 1 started in the wet and it was a difficult race, but I pushed until the end. It’s too bad I didn’t win, but I wanted to thank the team and everyone supporting me, so I’m glad I was on the podium.”

Tomoyoshi Koyama | MuSASHi Boon Siew Honda (5th / 2nd)

“I was in AP250 last year, and it was the first time on slick tires in SS600, and I started off surprised at how bumpy the track was compared to what I expected. Zaqhwan [Zaidi] who’s really fast in qualifying pulled me along, so I managed to set a good time. It was a physically tough race, with the temperature so high, especially the track at more than 60 degrees Celsius. For this round, we took out the air pack. We had a suspension engineer give us advice, and the setup went well, so we were on the podium. Strong Koyama is back, so look forward to more. I’m going to do better from here on.”

Keisuke Kurihara | A.P. Honda Racing Thailand (10th / 12th)

“I’ve been training to turn this bad flow around, but today wasn’t that day, and I need to improve more. I’ll take today’s results to heart, and try my best in the final two rounds.”

In Race 1, Anupab Sarmoon (Yamaha) takes the holeshot, but is caught up in a fierce battle to keep his lead. As more riders join the lead group, Sarmoon’s bike starts billowing white smoke, and is out of the race.

Andy Muhammad Fadly (Kawasaki) emerges from the lead group, chased by Reynaldo Chrisantho Ratu (Yamaha), Aji, and Ahrens for a 4-way battle. Fadly begins to fade and slips, leaving the other three riders to fight for the lead.

Ahrens pulls ahead of the pack to take the lead. Behind the lead group, five riders contend 4th place, of which Awhin Sanjaya (Astra Honda Racing Team) pulls ahead.

In the final three laps Aji takes the lead, but is in a fierce fight with Ahrens, the difference between the riders a mere 0.084s. Ahrens overtakes Aji in the final lap, to win the race. Further behind, riders are practically climbing over each other into the last turn, with some not emerging upright. In the end, Ahrens wins, Aji is 2nd, Ratu 3rd, and Sanjaya 5th.

In Race 2, Sarmoon overtakes holeshot-taker Ratu, to take the early lead, but relinquishes his position to Ahrens. At this stage Sarmoon is 2nd, Rafid Topan Sucipto (Yamaha) 3rd, and Peerapong Boonlert (Yamaha) 4th, all vying for the top spot. Aji falls on Lap 4, and is out of contention. As the race reaches its midpoint, race leader Ahrens slides, and although soon rejoins, has critically lost time.

Sarmoon takes over the lead, with Sucipto and Boonlert in tow, with Fadly and Ratu fighting for 4th. The chasing group catches the leaders, turning the fight for first into a 5-way battle. Sucipto takes the lead with Fadly behind, but Sarmoon overtakes them both. On the final lap Sucipto and Fadly collide, but cross the control line side by side. Sucipto is a fraction ahead, and wins. Fadly is 2nd, Sarmoon 3rd. Ahrens finishes 17th.
