Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS)

Technology overview

Assisting with steering to keep the vehicle near the center of a lane when driving on an expressway

Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS) reduces the burden on the driver when traveling long distances on an expressway by assisting with steering to keep the vehicle near the center of a lane.

The system uses a camera to detect lane markings (solid/broken lines) and assists steering to keep the vehicle near the center of the lane as it travels. Steering control is light when the vehicle is traveling near the center of the lane, and becomes stronger the closer the vehicle comes to the lane markings (solid/broken lines).

If the vehicle is in danger of straying from the lane, the system alerts the driver using steering wheel vibrations and a visual warning on the instrument panel and assists with steering the vehicle back toward the center of the lane.

*Some vehicle models alert the driver using the instrument panel display and sounds instead of steering wheel vibrations.
*LKAS is activated at speeds of around 65 km/h or faster. The function is not intended to take over steering from the driver. The function is not activated if the system judges the driver to have taken their hands off the steering wheel or to be intentionally steering the vehicle out of the lane, or if a turn signal is in use.

How it works

  • LKAS is activated by pressing the MAIN switch on the steering wheel, followed by the LKAS switch.

*The actual location of the switch and display on the instrument panel in customers’ vehicles may differ. Refer to the owner’s manual of a vehicle for the actual controls and instrument panel display.

If the system determines the vehicle is changing lanes without using a turn signal or there is a danger of the vehicle straying from the lane, the driver is alerted using steering wheel vibrations and a visual warning on the instrument panel.

*Some vehicle models warn the driver using the instrument panel display and sounds.

How it helps

LKAS processes video images detected with the camera to extract white (or yellow) lines on the road. Lane markings are detected if a dark road surface and the bright color of white (or yellow) lines continue. The system assists with steering by generating appropriate torque through the electric power steering (EPS).

Commitment of Honda

When the vehicle is in danger of straying from the lane, the driver is alerted using steering wheel vibrations. If the vehicle is about to encroach into the lane on the right, the steering wheel vibrates toward the left. If the vehicle is about to cross the lane markings on the left, the steering wheel vibrates toward the right. The aim is to instantly communicate in which direction the steering should be controlled.

[Video] Functions image

The individual functions of the driver-assistive system have limited capabilities (e.g. recognition capability and control capability). Please do not overestimate the capabilities of any function and drive safely while paying constant attention to the vehicle’s surroundings. A system may not work or perform adequately depending on road conditions, weather conditions and vehicle conditions.

Function is not installed in some areas.

Depending on the model and timing of the market launch of the model, descriptions provided on this page and the actual functions available on customers’ vehicles may be different. For the functions available for each vehicle, please check the owners’ manual of the respective vehicle.
