Lane Change Collision Mitigation

Technology overview

Detecting other vehicles approaching from behind to avoid a collision when making a lane change

Lane Change Collision Mitigation is a function where the system detects information of vehicles in the adjacent lanes and assist the driver in ensuring safety when making a lane change.
While driving within the speed range of medium to high speeds, if the driver is about to make a lane change when there is a vehicle in the adjacent lane approaching from behind, the system provides audible and visible warnings, as well as steering assists to prompt the driver to abandon the lane change.

How it works

The front sensor camera recognizes lane markings and the corner radars detect vehicles in the vicinity to assess the risk of a collision. Honda offers vehicles equipped with the Blind Spot Information (BSI) system, which detects and alerts the driver to the presence of other vehicles in the blind spot of the side mirrors. The Lane Change Collision Mitigation function expanded the detection/alerting range and added steering assist in case there is a risk of a collision, which further enhanced safety when making a lane change.

How it helps

When the driver starts making a lane change, the system detects the risk of a collision with vehicles approaching from behind.

When the driver starts making a lane change, the system detects the risk of a collision with vehicles approaching from behind.

If there is a possibility of a collision, the system notifies the driver with an indicator displayed in the side mirror.

To prevent a collision when making a lane change, the system provides visual warnings by lighting the indicator on the meter and side mirror, audible warnings and steering assist to avoid a collision with other vehicles in the lane the driver intends to move into. Regardless of whether the turn signal is on or off, this function gets activated when the driver attempts to make a lane change when there are vehicles approaching from behind with a risk of a collision. The system assists the driver to safely return to the original lane.

Commitment of Honda

The system is characterized by its combination of safety and acceptability. It processes multiple pieces of information to determine whether or not activation is necessary, depending on the surrounding road environment and the driver’s vehicle operation. The system activates itself when the danger level is high, and deactivates when it determines that the driver can safely change lanes.

The individual functions of the driver-assistive system have limited capabilities (e.g. recognition capability and control capability). Please do not overestimate the capabilities of any function and drive safely while paying constant attention to the vehicle’s surroundings. A system may not work or perform adequately depending on road conditions, weather conditions and vehicle conditions.

Depending on the model and timing of the market launch of the model, descriptions provided on this page and the actual functions available on customers’ vehicles may be different. For the functions available for each vehicle, please check the owners’ manual of the respective vehicle.
