Honda SENSING 360+Driver Emergency Support System

Driver Emergency Support System

When the driver falls into an abnormal condition and/or continues to be unresponsive to the system’s requests for a handover (transfer of control back to the driver), the system alerts the driver with warnings. If the driver remains unresponsive, the system assists deceleration and stopping of the vehicle within the same lane while alerting other road users around the vehicle using hazard lights and the horn. Furthermore, the system connects to the emergency support center.

Technology overview

Securing safety by stopping the vehicle when the driver falls into an emergency situation

When the driver becomes incapable of continuing to drive due to some factors such as a sudden change in health condition while driving, and when the driver continues to be unresponsive to the system’s requests for a handover, the system alerts the driver with warnings. If the driver remains unresponsive, the system assists with deceleration and stopping of the vehicle within the same lane while alerting other road users around the vehicle using hazard lights and the horn. Moreover, the system connects to the emergency call center service in order to secure the safety of the driver, occupants and other road users.

How it works

The driver monitoring camera detects abnormalities such as when the driver leans excessively forward or to the side or keeps eyes closed for an extended period of time due possibly to a sudden change in health condition. If the system determines that the driver is no longer capable of continuing to drive safely, it decelerates and stops the vehicle safely while alerting other road users around the vehicle. In doing so, the system reduces the possibility of the vehicle becoming out of control and experiencing a roadway departure due to an emergency situation the driver falls into.

If the driver monitoring camera detects abnormalities being experienced by the driver, the system keeps the vehicle driving within the lane based on the lane makings recognized by the front sensor camera, alerts other road users using hazard lights and the horn and automatically decelerates and stops the vehicle.
After stopping the vehicle, the system connects to the emergency call center service request an ambulance or other rescue services. The system provides visual and audible warnings to notify the occupants and rescuers when this function is in operation.

If the system determines that there is a driver emergency, it provides visual and audible notifications prior to deceleration. The system also notifies the driver how to cancel the deceleration before it takes place if the driver determines that there is no emergency.

Commitment of Honda

If the driver loses consciousness and the vehicle becomes out of control, it could lead to a serious incident. This function is designed with the aim to increase the probability of survival for the driver and to mitigate damage to other road users by detecting the driver emergency as early as possible and by decelerating and stopping the vehicle as quickly as possible.

The individual functions of the driver-assistive system have limited capabilities (e.g. recognition capability and control capability). Please do not overestimate the capabilities of any function and drive safely while paying constant attention to the vehicle’s surroundings.
A system may not work or perform adequately depending on road conditions, weather conditions and vehicle conditions.

Depending on the model and timing of the market launch of the model, descriptions provided on this page and the actual functions available on customers’ vehicles may be different. For the functions available for each vehicle, please check the owners’ manual of the respective vehicle.
