Sharp, responsive acceleration in sync with
the driver’s intentions
Honda’s innovative hybrid system, e:HEV, delivers an exhilarating drive and
Direct Acceleration is one technology underlying this performance. In
addition to the benefits of an electric motor that can generate maximum
torque right from when the vehicle starts moving, high-precision control of
electricity generation by the engine produces acceleration that feels as if
it comes straight from the foot upon the accelerator pedal. Direct
Acceleration provides satisfying acceleration that synchronizes with the
driver’s intentions in ordinary driving scenarios, such as when starting
from a standstill at an intersection or when merging or overtaking on an
expressway.
Improved acceleration response with early activation of engine
power generation harnessing battery output
The e:HEV hybrid system is equipped with two motors, a traction motor and a
generator motor. When a large driving torque is required, such as when
starting from standstill or accelerating, the traction motor is driven by a
combination of electrical power generated by the engine and electricity
stored in the battery. Direct Acceleration estimates the driving
circumstances from data, such as vehicle speed and the degree of accelerator
application, and controls engine speed, motor torque, and other parameters
with high precision. Making use of battery output, electricity generation by
the engine is activated early to respond to the driver’s acceleration
intent. Improving the engine power generation response gives rise to a
powerful acceleration G-force from the moment the accelerator pedal is
pressed.
