Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS)

Technology overview

Assisting collision avoidance by detecting people and vehicles

The Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS) assists collision avoidance or damage minimization when there is a risk of a collision with a pedestrian or another vehicle due to inattentiveness.

The current CMBS combines a millimeter-wave radar with a camera to detect vehicles in front and oncoming vehicles, as well as pedestrians. The millimeter-wave radar detects the distance to a vehicle or pedestrian and the speed of the target with high accuracy. Meanwhile, the camera identifies the type of object and its size, making it suitable for detection of pedestrians. Combining a camera and millimeter-wave radar makes it possible to detect pedestrians, which was difficult for earlier systems using only millimeter-wave radar.

*CMBS helps to avoid a collision or lessen the damage caused by a collision should such a situation arise. However, CMBS is an assistive technology and collision avoidance action taken by the driver takes priority.

How it works

  • Detection of a pedestrian or vehicle in front
  • Detection of an oncoming vehicle

STEP2

If there is a risk of a collision, warning sounds and a visual warning on the instrument panel are used to catch the attention of the driver.

*Vehicles equipped with the Reactive Force Pedal feature will alert the driver using accelerator pedal vibrations.
*A head-up warning will be displayed in some vehicle models.

If there is a risk of a collision, warning sounds and a visual warning on the instrument panel are used to catch the attention of the driver.

STEP3

If the object gets closer, light braking will be used to alert the driver in addition to the warning sounds and visual warning on the instrument panel.

*Vehicles with an e-pretensioner system alert the driver with light seat belt tightening.

If the object gets closer, light braking will be used to alert the driver in addition to the warning sounds and visual warning on the instrument panel.

STEP4

If the risk of a collision mounts, the system assists collision avoidance or minimization of damage by firmly applying the brake in addition to the warning sounds and visual warning on the instrument panel.

*Vehicles with an e-pretensioner system prepare for impact with firm seat belt tightening.

How it helps

Earlier systems using only millimeter-wave radar had difficulty detecting pedestrians because radio waves emitted by a millimeter-wave radar are weaker reflected off pedestrians than off vehicles.

Honda addressed this by combining the technology with a camera’s ability to extract images of pedestrians from the surrounding scenery.

[Video] Functions image

The individual functions of the driver-assistive system have limited capabilities (e.g. recognition capability and control capability). Please do not overestimate the capabilities of any function and drive safely while paying constant attention to the vehicle’s surroundings. A system may not work or perform adequately depending on road conditions, weather conditions and vehicle conditions.

Function is not installed in some areas.

Depending on the model and timing of the market launch of the model, descriptions provided on this page and the actual functions available on customers’ vehicles may be different. For the functions available for each vehicle, please check the owners’ manual of the respective vehicle.
