Honda Social Project Conducted at After Sales Training Center in Brazil
SDG 4 : Quality education, 10 : Reduced inequalities
Since 2007, Honda's After Sales Training Center (CT) in Recife, located in the State of Pernambuco in Brazil, has been offering a professional training program under the name of “Programa Social Honda (Honda Social Project) Professionals Training Course”. The project, which follows the company's global vision of sharing joy with people around the world through socially responsible activities, seeks to recognize the importance of education in the individual formation of young people.
Specifically, this course has been offered to socially vulnerable students from ages 18 to 20 residing in the Metropolitan Region of Recife. With 870 hours of training, the program provides introduction to technical skills with practical and theoretical classes on car and motorcycle mechanics. It also consists of behavioral modules, such as, on health, family relations, and information technology, which are designed to build the foundation for young people to become responsible members of the working society.
In these 16 years since the launch, the Social Project attracted a total of 290 young participants to the training program focused on ensuring high employability and competitiveness in the labor market.
Most recently, this course was offered to 19 students from May through December 2022, which were supported by 22 Honda associates who acted as volunteer educators, and a total of approximately BRL 284,264 was spent for the completion of this seven-month program. As a matter of reference, the employment rate of the students in the last class that completed the course in December 2022 reach 100%. Such figure shows that this project has contributed significantly to not only promoting a positive change in the mindset and livelihood of the students not only during their participation in the course, but also embedding a lasting effect in their professional attitude after they joined the workforce.

"Sowing Dreams - Kitchen Oil Collection" Project Supported by Honda Automóveis do Brazil (HAB)
SDG 4 : Quality education, 10 : Reduced inequalities
"Semeando Sonhos - Coleta de Óleo de Cozinha (Sowing Dreams - Kitchen Oil Collection)" project is a social and environmental initiative implemented by Honda Automóveis do Brasil (HAB) since 2019, in the city of Itirapina/SP (population: 18,387). The project aims to promote integration between Honda, its associates and the local community to pursue the shared interest of raising the awareness about environmental sustainability.
The oil collection process starts from the voluntary action by Honda's associates who bring used oil from their homes to the collection points designated by the company. All the used oil collected at these points are then filtered and refined for resale by a partnering institution. Through this project, a total of 2,194 liters of oil have been collected, and the proceeds gained from the sale of recycled oil were used to benefit 110 children and 23 elderly people supported by this institution.
In 2022, this social service project led by Honda has been expanded by establishing a partnership with the city’s academic community. The joint efforts with the schools in the area led to increasing the volume of oil collected. In return, Honda granted the schools the privilege to store the oil donations received and also conducted educational lectures in local theaters to explain the importance of this initiative and alarm the negative impacts to the environment that could be caused by the inappropriate disposal of used oil.
An internal competition built among the participating schools led to generating proactive engagement and participation of a total of 1,882 students. Two teams from the winning school that achieved the largest volume of used oil collection per class were given the opportunity to visit the production and effluent treatment facilities of Honda's automobile plant in the city of Itirapina/SP.
"Vertical Bike" Project Supported by Honda del Peru S.A(HDP)
SDG 3 : Good health and well-being, 4 : Quality education
According to the Peruvian Institute of Amazon Research (IIAP), close to 800,000 square kilometers of Amazon forest are spread within the Peruvian borders, making Peru the second largest Amazon forest state after Brazil. Every year, more than 1 million trees in the Peruvian Amazon forest, covering a total area equivalent to 800,000 professional soccer stadiums, have been indiscriminately cut down for the harvesting of aguaje, a fruit known for having a high concentration of vitamin A that grows on the top portion of palm trees which normally get as high as 35 meters. Since this height has made it very difficult for the farmers to reach the fruit from the ground, the fastest way for them to harvest it has long been to cut down the trees.
In light of this, a company named Ogilvy Peru developed a creative solution called "Vertical Bike" to facilitate the collection of this fruit without the need of cutting down the trees. Honda del Peru (HDP) has contributed to this project by supplying the engines for the prototypes. This equipment designed to be easily transported with a capacity to hold up to 90 kilograms allows a harvester to climb up to the top of the 35-meter high tree in just 30 seconds, and is contributing significantly to protect Amazon ecosystem and its biodiversity. Besides preserving the environment, it also helps improve the work efficiency and increase the productivity of the farmers during the harvesting season.
