Honda has long been producing generators, but designing the LiB-AID E500, an electric storage unit, started when the Great East Japan earthquake struck, as a passion to create a more convenient power source that’s capable enough to run information devices for the whole family. The concept model, developed on the theme to bring electricity to anyone, any time, easily and safely, took design cues from Honda’s first generator, the E 300, and modernized the design in a friendly form. We added more color models, and exhibited Honda’s first E500 power source concept model at the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show.

We saw the reaction to the concept model at the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show, and decided to move ahead with this symbolism (design cues from the E300). My job was to design a commercial model that would be fondly accepted by a wide range of customers, and make it a realistic product. The key concept for this product is, “where am I going to take my electricity?” I hope the E500 becomes a natural part of everyday life, allowing customers to expand their imagination.
