Third Generation Pursues More Composure and Comfort with New Engine
The Gold Wing GL1100 established the series as a grand tourer in the U.S. The development team was not yet satisfied, aiming to design a tourer with more composure and comfort.
The newly designed engine increased the GL1100’s bore and stroke, increasing displacement from 1,085 cc to 1,182 cc.
The chassis was larger, and the wheelbase was extended. Tire sizes were also revised. Although there were variations within the series, the 1983 GL1100 Aspencade’s 18-inch front and 16-inch rear wheels, for example, were revised to the 1984 GL1200 Aspencade’s 16-inch front and 15-inch rear.
The development team also pursued quick mobility despite the Gold Wing’s large size, bringing it closer to its ideal form.
The resulting Gold Wing GL1200 grew its fan base, especially in the U.S. as an even more comfortable grand tourer.
The GL1200 series ended with the 1987 year model, to be replaced by the 1988 Gold Wing GL1500.
