Gold Wing Stories
Second Generation Model On the Path to Long Distance Tourer with Bigger Engine
In 1980, five years after the first Gold Wing (GL1000) was launched in 1975, the Gold Wing (GL1100) was launched with a larger displacement engine and remodeled design as a tourer.
Production was moved from Japan to Honda of America Manufacturing in Ohio, U.S.A.
The newly designed liquid-cooled, 4-stroke, OHC, horizontally opposed 4-cylinder 1,085cc engine emphasized torque rather than maximum output. The wheelbase was extended to provide more space for the rider and passenger.
Based on the GL1100, the luxuriously equipped Gold Wing GL1100 INTERSTATE was developed for comfortable long-distance touring.
The INTERSTATE was the first Gold Wing to feature fairing, saddle bags and a trunk as standard equipment.
In 1982, the Gold Wing GL1100 ASPENCADE was released, with LCD meters, a stereo system with AM/FM radio, and improved seats and backrests, further enhancing passenger comfort.
This innovative concept of a luxury tourer gained high popularity in the United States.
The Gold Wing GL1100 began its journey as a road sport model, but in response to the usage and demands of American riders, morphed into a long-distance tourer.
