A Bike to Satisfy All Riders’ Joy of Ownership

In November 2012, the CBR500R, CB500F, and CB500X were exhibited at EICMA 2012 (Milan Motorcycle Shows) in Milan, Italy. These three models were powered by a newly developed water-cooled, 4-stroke, DOHC, 4-valve, in-line 2-cylinder engine.

A new lineup was born with distinctive personalities: the full-fairing sports CBR500R, the naked road sport CB500F, and the crossover CB500X, adopting the latest design trends.

In developing these models, Honda determined the displacement, body size, and design while researching the needs of users around the world. Riders have a wide range of preferences, and the ideal motorcycle for each varies widely.

For example, some seasoned large-displacement sports model riders prefer a smaller displacement and a body size that is easier to maneuver. On the other hand, some small-displacement bike users want to move up to full-fledged sports models.

To meet the needs of such a wide range of users, Honda decided on a mid-sized 500cc (400cc in Japan) engine. The body would be a compact, lightweight diamond-type frame that is both supple and rigid, with 17-inch wheels.

And, to achieve an affordable price, three models were developed concurrently, sharing the same engine and chassis. The styling of each model was distinct, but they all shared a high level of quality, pursuing the joy of ownership.

The Key to Super Sports DNA Design

The CBR500R/CBR400R design was based on “Super Sports DNA,” and featured a full fairing with excellent aerodynamic characteristics that inherit the DNA of the CBR1000RR, the CBR series’ flagship model.

The sharply designed dual headlights created a fearless front fascia.

While equipped with a full fairing, the CBR gained a new design language, showcasing the engine’s powerful sculpted beauty.

Powered by All-new Engine

The newly developed water-cooled, 4-stroke, DOHC, 4-valve, in-line 2-cylinder engine wwas designed to provide smooth and powerful output characteristics from low to mid-range and high rpm, while offering excellent fuel economy and environmental performance.

The CBR500R’s bore and stroke was 67.0 mm and 66.8 mm respectively for the 471 cc engine, while the CBR400R’s engine had a different stroke (56.6 mm) reducing the displacement to 399 cc.
