Africa Twin Stories
1,100 cc Africa Twin with Refined Technology
The CRF1000L Africa Twin, based on the concept of “True Adventure,” lures riders on an adventure across harsh terrain. In response to its popularity with many riders in Europe and the world, Honda’s development team further evolved the CRF1100L Africa Twin, resulting in the 2019 model.
The development team tested the new CRF1100L in a wide range of scenarios, including off-road, on-road, long-distance touring, and urban riding.
Their goal was to improve the total balance of the bike to cover all situations while staying true to the “True Adventure” concept.
As a result the engine was a liquid-cooled, 4-stroke, 4-valve, in-line 2-cylinder OHC (Unicam valve train) engine with a displacement increased from 998 cc to 1,082 cc.
The frame housing the more powerful engine was both highly rigid and supple, while also reducing weight by 6 kg compared to the previous model.
Efforts also focused on improving ease of handling. Developers’ focused their ingenuity in many areas, including a mechanism allowing the seat height to be adjusted 20 mm lower, dramatically increasing rider footing comfort.
The CRF1100L Africa Twin Adventure Sports was released at the same time as an upgraded model of the standard CRF1100L Africa Twin. This model was also available as the CRF1100L Africa Twin Adventure Sports ES, featuring electronically controlled suspension for even greater maneuverability and comfort.
