Honda of the UK Manufacturing Ltd. runs quarterly charity polls on site where associates can pick between three charities to donate money to. Over a period of a few days, associates are given a token every time they purchase an item from the canteen which they then place in one of three boxes. The charity with the highest number of tokens receives £750, second place receives £500 and third receives £250. The charities are chosen based on location in relation to the plant and by the company’s quarterly theme (Safety, Environment, People and Quality).
Honda of the UK Manufacturing also donates festive hampers to local charities. The hampers go to a wide range of charities including foodbanks, a local cancer hospice and a women’s refuge. The hampers are then either distributed to people who are supported by the charities, or auctioned/raffled to raise much needed funds for the charities.
Honda of the UK Manufacturing uses Associate Matched Funding to support associates raising money for a local or national charity. The company donates up to £250 (for an individual) and £1,000 (for group sponsorship) to match their sponsored activity.
Motorcycles for Training Donated by Honda Motorcycle Kenya
SDG 8 : Decent work and economic growth
The National Industrial Training Authority (NITA) is a public institution in Kenya equivalent to a polytechnic or vocational skills development center in Japan. In 2018, Honda Motorcycle Kenya Limited donated motorcycles for training to NITA so participants could learn about motorcycle structure and technology. The program was even featured on the local TV news. In future, Honda will continue with such initiatives in the Africa & Middle East region in pursuit of growth with the local community that extends beyond business.
SDG 4 : Quality education
Synchro Schools is a programme created to promote engineering and creativity in 10 to 12 year olds. Using established relationships with local schools, we invite groups of pupils on site to learn about car manufacturing in an interactive three hour workshop that consists of quizzes, Lego building, videos, a tour of our production line and an opportunity to meet our factory race team, Synchro Motorsport. The overarching aim is to inspire a future generation of engineers, with a particular focus on encouraging girls to consider a career in STEM, increase the number of potential future applicants, and increase our brand awareness within the local community.
Reducing Single-use Plastic

With the topic of single-use plastic being so prevalent in the news agenda, Honda of the UK Manufacturing conducted some research on its plastic use. From this research, we identified key areas where we could introduce alternative materials and/or better equip our workforce to reduce their individual plastic use at work. In 2018, we introduced reusable water bottles. This has led to a reduction in single-use plastic bottles of 65% (February 2018 vs. February 2019). Single-use plastic water cups have now been replaced with reusable ones, and this has seen a decrease in single-use plastic water cups of 62% (February 2018 vs. February 2019).
Activities to Promote Safe Riding, Targeting Broad Age Groups

Montesa Honda S.A. in Spain has been providing motorcycle traffic safety education since 1992. In 2009, safety training operations started at the new premises of the Honda Safety Institute, located in Sta. Perpetua, Barcelona, where Honda Spain is based. It is a dedicated facility occupying 20,000 square meters designed for motorcycle training. The training program includes a wide range of training courses to cover all rider profiles, from children aged six years old to experienced riders. The main activities are concentrated
during the weekends; however, from Monday to Friday activity is focused on companies (employee training) or professionals (e.g., police, courier services). The Advanced Motorcycling course of the Honda Safety Institute has received the European Motorcycle Training Quality Label. The award, which recognizes the best post-license training programs delivered in Europe, was granted after an onsite visit by safety experts from the German Road Safety Council (DVR), the most important German NGO active in the field of road safety.
