Garth Hill College mock interview workshops
SDG 4 : Quality education
A number of Honda associates helped Year 10 students at Garth Hill College to improve their interview and communication skills, to prepare them for work experience applications.
At Honda, we know the true measure of a company isn’t just great products but the impact that the company has on society. Supporting our local community through volunteering opportunities like this can really make a difference to young people’s lives.
Between March 4–5, 2020, 20 volunteers from Honda took the time to help nearly 275 Year 10 students at Garth Hill College prepare for their work placement interviews. The feedback was so positive from both the volunteers and students that we’d like to extend our support this year.
This initiative is driven by the Thames Valley Berkshire Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP), a partnership between the local authority and businesses to support economic growth in the local area. They matched Honda with Garth Hill College, one of the biggest secondary schools in Berkshire, due to both their location and their interest in STEM subjects.
Supporting our local Citizens Advice Bureau
SDG 11 : Extended opening hours
Citizens Advice Bureau helps people in the local community resolve their legal, money and other problems by providing free, independent and confidential advice, and by influencing policymakers.
Citizens Advice Bureau & District is an independent, voluntary organisation and a registered charity. They have been assisting local people with their problems since 1961. Their services are free, independent, confidential and impartial. They provide comprehensive advice to help people in the local community with a variety of problems, including benefits, work, debt and money, consumer, relationships, housing, discrimination, law and rights, tax, healthcare and education. They also offer specialist help in the areas of benefits, debt, employment and tax, including help with disability benefit applications, benefit appeals, Debt Relief Orders and employment tribunals.
Through our philanthropy grant with Berkshire Community Foundation, Honda is able to help Bracknell Citizens Advice Bureau maintain their Friday opening project, which extends their opening hours to provide the service to more people in the local community.
SDG 12 : Increased associate engagement in recycling
Recycling and waste management is an important part of sustainability and a topic that many of the associates care about as we can see from Associate Forum feedback.
Working with Sodexo, our facilities management supplier at Bracknell head office, we will promote the importance of recycling, encourage associates to help us reduce the impact on our environment and ensure our recycling facilities are clearly labelled and available for associates.
Cycle-Smart Foundation's 5S to Cycle Safety
SDG 3 : Good health and well-being
Cycle-Smart is committed to saving young people’s lives by promoting all aspects of safer cycling, in particular, the use of cycle helmets.
Rates of serious injury for child cyclists are shown to be three times higher in the most deprived areas than in the least deprived.
As part of our philanthropy grant with Berkshire Community Foundation (BCF), we are funding to deliver their 5S to Cycle Safety programme in Reading. An educator will deliver a fun and interactive programme to years 5–8 in schools in areas of deprivation. The children will play games to help them understand brain function, carry out experiments with helmets, be given an understanding of how to combat peer pressure and they will learn the 5S of cycle safety. The Educator will also train nominated teachers, so that they can continue to roll out the programme, year after year. We will provide free cycle helmets to children without helmets from low income families, and low cost helmets to children without helmets from higher income families.
Holding a Motorcycle Safety Seminar in Nigeria
SDG 11 : Sustainable cities and communities
Honda provides a seminar for riders to learn appropriate motorcycle riding and maintenance in Nigeria.
The seminar teaches the importance of performing pre-ride checks; appropriate riding posture (when applying a brake or clutch); the benefits of motorcycles that use Honda's genuine parts and engine oil; and regular maintenance.
Dealers in Nigeria hold this seminar every month, with a total of 4,202 and 6,300 riders participating in 2018 and 2019, respectively.
Honda is the only motorcycle manufacturer conducting such an activity in Nigeria. The Company intends to continue the activity to help increase traffic safety in the country if by only slightly.
